This series of abstracts on raw canvas (Abstract Moments No. 1-5) is rooted in the work of the female artists of the early abstract expressionism movement. Specifically, I was inspired by Helen Frankenthaler and her then innovative technique of staining raw or unprimed canvases with watered-down paint.
Because of my experience with watercolor, I was drawn to experiment with another water-based paint. I found watered-down acrylic beautifully compatible with raw canvas in that colors soak in and merge into the canvas as opposed to sitting on top of it as it does with watercolor. What resulted from this experiment was a series of spatially dimensional and vibrant compositions.
I love that the texture of the raw canvas is still evident in this canvas print.
